Seeing a chain reaction of smiles is a very cool thing, and at KISC, you are able to experience that every day!
As a hike guide at KISC I am taking groups from all over the world up in the mountains, we are hiking several hundred vertical meters no matter if it rains or it’s boiling hot, we are crossing glaciers together, we walk across snowfields with the help of ice axes (yep, even in July…) and we eventually reach the peak or the hut with the best cake worldwide as a team. Being present when all the exhaustion, the sore knees or the lack of motivation is forgotten and everyone just looks down the mountain with a smile on their faces and see what they’ve achieved – that makes me smile.
But life as a hike guide also implies being away from KISC a lot and that means not seeing my Pinkie Family that often. But every time I come back from a hike, sometimes covered in mud, with sunburn behind my ears (honestly, that can happen!) and very tired but happy, I am welcomed and hugged and instantly get the feeling of belonging here again. This feeling of being part of something bigger is simply amazing and makes me smile every time I remember it.
There are many other reason why you see my walking around with a big smile on my face – maybe I just learned some Swedish words, maybe the wonderful people in catering baked chocolate cake, maybe the group I took hiking told me that I did a great job, maybe it’s because the sun is out or maybe I am just looking forward to the next day going out for a new adventure.
I am smiling because of little things that happen every second at KISC and sometimes I even don’t need a reason. Just remembering that I have the opportunity to meet all these amazing people every day, that I live in this beautiful place in the Swiss Alps and that I have the best job I could ever imagine makes me smile right now.
So – if you see me around, just give me a smile, I’ll pass it on to the next person I see!
